Chapter 3 · Mission One and a Half · the first night in the void

The Interdiction

Page 1 · What I am for

Shadow alone in vacuum, very small, very far out from everything.

The others get told where to stand. I get told how far away.

The scope. The reticle finding a small thing at enormous distance.

Obsidian is patience with a barrel on it. You hold still, and you look, and eventually the thing you are looking at stops being able to hide.

Shadow's helm, the one eye, not blinking.

mirageYou have not moved in forty minutes.

shadowGood.

The wing ahead of him. Four machines and a wounded leviathan, small, in formation.

The other four were up ahead where the work was. That is the arrangement and I have never once minded it.

Page 2 · The gate shuts

The wing bursts out of collapsing jump-light beside the Indomitable.

We came out of the jump escorting the Indomitable home, and for about four seconds it was an ordinary night.

Behind them, the ring gate shuts. Light collapsing to a seam.
Shadow's scope swinging to it. Too late to matter.

I had been looking the other way. That is the whole of my job and I had been looking the other way.

The Still-Well, hanging in the dark, holding the lock closed.

Something was holding the gate shut from this side, and it was not in a hurry.

Page 3 · The inventory

What the scope found, all of it at once.

I counted for eleven seconds and then I stopped counting and started sorting.

The Gulper's mouth, close.

The big one with the mouth makes more of the small ones. You do not shoot that one first, you shoot it only.

The Kraken's reach, measured against the whole field.

The one with the arms can touch anything inside forty. I marked the whole volume and there was nowhere in it that was not inside forty.

And the last thing, which he could not sort at all.

And a shell, hanging open, with nothing in it.

mirageWhat is that for.

shadowNothing. It has no guns on it.

Page 4 · The arithmetic

Psyche through the cloud, spear through two.

Psyche took two off the shaft on one pass and I heard the whole comm laugh.

His own shot, finally connecting.
The Gulper, answering. New ones coming out wet.

I killed four. It made six while I was killing four.

Shadow holding position, doing the sum nobody wants.

The sum was not close. I ran it three times because I wanted it to be close.

Page 5 · The drift

The asteroid field across the middle of the fight.

The rocks were the only thing out there that was on our side.

Magus in a full burn, not firing.
The rock finishes it.

Magus killed one with a rock. He is going to tell that story for a year and it will be worth it every time.

Shadow, watching, and for one moment enjoying it.

mirageYou are smiling.

shadowI am not built to smile.

mirageAnd yet.

Page 6 · The Kraken earns it

An arm comes out of the dark and takes Monolyth.
Shadow's scope on the tentacle, and no shot.

I had a line on the arm. I also had a line on Monolyth, because they were the same line.

It picks again, further out, and takes Psyche at range.

Then it reached past him and took Psyche instead, from further away than I would have said was possible.

Psyche along a rock face at speed.
What is left of Psyche, still held.

Nobody decided that. It grabbed, it pulled, and the rocks were where they were.

Page 7 · The thing I could not see

Shadow bringing the railgun onto the Hollow. A clean line at last.

And then it gave me the shot. Wide open, no rocks, nothing in the way.

The place where it was.

It did not move. It stopped being somewhere.

Down the scope. Nothing. Just stars.

My whole discipline is that hidden things stop being hidden if you are patient enough.

Shadow's eye, and something wrong with it.

mirageCareful.

shadowI know.

Page 8 · Glamour

The field through Shadow's sight, and everything in it looks the same.

Obsidian has one failure and it is not blindness. Blindness would be a mercy.

Two shapes. One is Magus. He cannot tell which.

It is that everything out there starts looking like everything else.

The barrel, not firing.

I did not take the shot. I want that written down somewhere.

And while he was not shooting, they closed.

mirageShadow.

mirageSHADOW.

Page 9 · Three go dark

Magus, buried, going out.

Magus first. He was still accelerating when the lights went out of him.

Orca, turning back, going out.

Then Orca, who was turning back for him, which is the only direction Orca ever turns.

Shadow, alone, farthest out, watching both go.

I was eleven kilometres away, which is exactly where I had asked to be.

The reach that finds him anyway.

Forty, I had said. I had marked the whole volume.

Page 10 · Kept

The Abalone closing on three of them.

It did not kill any of us. I want to be clear about that, because it is the part that frightens me.

Inside. The berth. Fitted, padded, exactly the right size.

The berth fitted. Somebody measured.

Shadow's eye, still lit, still working, unable to do anything with it.

My eye stayed on. Nothing else did.

I could see the whole inside of it and I could not turn my head.

And the voice that had not spoken in days spoke.

Still KingBe still, little Cantors. Three of you already sleep in the shell.

Still KingNow. We will take you home.

Page 11 · What he was offering

Shadow, in the dark, hearing his own discipline in somebody else's mouth.

Be still.

I have been still my whole life. I am the best in the wing at being still.

A memory. A boy on a roof at night with a long glass, not moving.

I was good at it before they gave me a frame. I was good at it before I could carry anything.

The same memory. Nobody comes up to the roof.

Nobody ever came up. I told myself for thirty years that this was the arrangement and that I preferred it.

Back in the shell. The eye, and the thing it has just understood.

He was not threatening me. He was offering me the thing I already do, forever, and expecting me to want it.

mirageDo you.

Page 12 · Hold fast

Outside. Monolyth, alone in the middle of it, transmitting.

monolythCaptain. Incoming support. HOLD FAST.

The Hollow answers first. Eight of them, out of a green bloom.
And nine more arrive with them, and they are not his.

The Chambered Hall came in first, and behind it every hull the Seat could reach in one jump.

Page 13 · Come home the other way

Aurelia over the shell, forcing it open.
Light coming into the shell. Shadow's eye, flooded with it.

The green went out and something warm came in over the top of it, and my eye did the one thing it still could. It looked up.

The world underneath, answering the King directly.

UnisonNo. These are OURS.

UnisonEvery song you stilled, we remember. And we are many, and we are LOUD.

UnisonCome, children. Come home the other way.

The Still King, lit from below by a planet that will not stop.

He had come for a shell full of quiet and the whole planet answered him.

Page 14 · The field, after

One round of capital war.
The Still-Well comes apart.
The gate, open again, unhurried.
When the light went, the field held only friends.

Five of us, scarred and whole, in the middle of an armada that had come a long way in a hurry.

Page 15 · What I saw

Shadow, back in vacuum, upright, the eye working again.

I got my head back and the first thing I did was count us. Five. I counted twice.

The other four, close together, not spread out.

They were bunched up. Nobody had told them to bunch up.

Shadow, at eleven kilometres, looking at the gap.

I have told myself for thirty years that the distance is the job.

Mirage, waiting, not saying it for him.

mirageSay it.

shadowNot yet.

mirageI can wait. You taught me.

Page 16 · Where we stopped

The armada holding station. The Hollow fleet running.

They ran. Nobody chased them, which surprised me until I thought about it for a second.

The empty shell, drifting, open.

They left the shell behind. It is still out there. Somebody will find it and not know what it is for.

Shadow closing the distance. A little.

I moved up to four kilometres. Nobody said anything about it and I am grateful for that.

Five of them, together, and the gate open behind.

Nobody was lost. Everybody was taken back.

And he knows our names now. He had to learn five of them and he only wanted the quiet ones.
